Job Description

A Survey Technician is responsible for supporting mine surveyors and engineers in  conducting accurate surveys, collecting essential data, and maintaining surveying  equipment’s. This position involves a combination of fieldwork, data processing, and  administrative tasks to ensure precise mapping, measurements, and documentation at  mining sites. 

Key Responsibilities: 

Field Surveying 

  • Assist in conducting surveys at mining sites, including surface and underground  areas, to gather data on assigned territory, geological features, and mining  operations. 
  • Participate in the setup and operation of surveying instruments such as total  stations, GPS, and laser scanners. 

Data Collection and Recording 

  • Collect and record survey data accurately, ensuring proper documentation of  measurements, coordinates, and observations. 
  • Assist in organising and managing survey data in digital and physical formats.

Survey Instrument Maintenance 

  • Assist in the maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of surveying instruments  to ensure accuracy and reliability. 
  • Report any issues promptly and assist in minor repairs when possible.

Topographical Mapping 

  • Contribute to the creation of topographical maps, contour surveys, and elevation  measurements using surveying equipment and software. 
  • Aid in mapping geological formations, infrastructure, and other relevant features.

 Volume Calculations 

  • Assist in calculating stockpile volumes, excavation quantities, and ore reserves using  survey data and appropriate calculation methods. 
  • Learn to use software tools for accurate volumetric calculations.

Data Processing and Analysis 

  • Support mine surveyor in processing survey data using specialized software,  generating digital maps, and creating 3D models. 
  • Assist in data analysis and collaborate with engineers and geologists to integrate  survey data into project planning.

Safety and Compliance 

  • Adhere to safety protocols and regulations during fieldwork, ensuring the safety of  oneself and team members. 
  • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements related to land surveying  and mining activities. 

Documentation and Reporting 

  • Assist in preparing survey reports, drawings, and documentation for internal and  external use. 
  • Contribute to the preparation of accurate and detailed survey records. 

Communication and Teamwork 

  • Communicate effectively with mine surveyors, engineers, and other team members,  providing necessary support in surveying activities. 
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure seamless coordination between surveying,  engineering, and geological teams. 

Continuous Learning 

  • Participate in training sessions and professional development opportunities to enhance  surveying skills and knowledge. 
  • Stay updated with advancements in surveying technologies and methodologies.
  •  Perform any other relevant duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor from time to  time 

Key Qualifications:

Academic and Experience Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in surveying, Geomatics, or a related field. 

Professional Qualifications: 

  • Professional certification or licensure as a surveyor is an added advantage. 

Experience: 

  • At least 3 years of experience in mine surveying, preferably in the mining or  construction industry. 

Technical Competences: 

  • Basic understanding of surveying principles and equipment operation.
  • Familiarity with surveying software and tools is advantageous. 
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in data collection and documentation.
  • Ability to integrate survey data into mine planning and design processes.

Behavioral Competences: 

  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Effective communication skill 
  • Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams. 
  • Physical fitness and willingness to work in outdoor and challenging environments.
