Job Description
A HD (Heavy Duty) Mechanics is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and servicing heavy machinery and equipment used in mining operations. The role involves diagnosing mechanical issues, performing repairs, conducting preventive maintenance, and ensuring mining equipment operates efficiently and safely. The role holder plays a crucial role in minimizing downtime, optimizing equipment performance, and contributing to the overall productivity of mining operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintenance Planning.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for mining equipment, ensuring regular inspections, lubrication, and replacements.
- Coordinate with mining operations and production teams to schedule equipment downtime for maintenance activities.
Equipment Maintenance.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues in heavy mining equipment such as haul trucks, excavators, loaders, and bulldozers.
- Perform preventive maintenance tasks, including inspections, lubrication, and component replacements to prevent breakdowns and ensure optimal performance.
Technical Expertise.
- Utilize technical manuals, diagnostic tools, and equipment schematics to identify and rectify faults in mining machinery.
- Stay updated with the latest technologies and advancements in heavy equipment mechanics to enhance repair techniques.
Safety Compliance.
- Adhere to safety protocols and regulations while conducting maintenance and repair activities.
- Conduct pre-operation checks and ensure that all safety features and systems on equipment are functioning correctly.
Parts and Inventory Management.
- Maintain an organized inventory of spare parts and components for common mining equipment.
- Coordinate with the procurement team to order necessary parts and maintain stock levels to minimize downtime.
Welding and Fabrication.
- Perform welding and fabrication tasks to repair or reinforce equipment components as needed.
- Ensure proper welding techniques and material selection for durable repairs.
Documentation and Reporting.
- Document all maintenance and repair activities, including parts used, labor hours, and equipment status.
- Prepare detailed reports for management, highlighting equipment conditions, repair histories, and recommendations.
Emergency Repairs.
- Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and conduct on-the-spot repairs to minimize downtime.
- Collaborate with other maintenance staff to handle emergency repairs efficiently.
Quality Control.
- Conduct quality checks on repaired equipment to ensure that all components are functioning correctly and safely.
- Test equipment after repairs to verify the effectiveness of the fixes and conduct necessary adjustments.
Training and Support.
- Provide training and guidance to junior mechanics and trainees, sharing knowledge and best practices.
- Assist in skill development programs to enhance the expertise of the maintenance team.
Continuous Improvement.
- Suggest opportunities for process improvement, cost reduction, and efficiency enhancement within the workshop and maintenance unit.
- Collaborate with engineers and supervisors to implement innovative solutions and upgrades to equipment.
- Perform any other relevant duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor from time to time

Key Qualifications:
Academic and Experience Qualifications.
- Trade certification as a Heavy Duty Mechanic or equivalent qualification.
Technical Competencies.
- Good knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulics, and electrical systems in heavy equipment.
- Proficiency in diagnostic tools and equipment for troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and best practices in heavy equipment maintenance.
- Physical fitness and stamina to handle the demands of the job, including lifting and working in various conditions.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement in maintenance operations.

- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
Experience
- At least 2 years of experience as a HD Mechanic in the industrial environment.
