Job Summary
Mkwawa Water Limited, a leading drinking water company in Tanzania, is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Lab Technician to join our team. The Lab Technician will be responsible for conducting routine and specialized tests on water samples to ensure compliance with national and international water quality standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in laboratory procedures, a keen eye for detail, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and accuracy.
Key Responsibilities
- Sample Collection and Analysis:
- Collect water samples from various sources, including raw water, treated water, and distribution points.
- Perform physical, chemical, and microbiological tests on water samples to assess quality.
- Use laboratory equipment such as pH meters, turbidimeters, spectrophotometers, and microbiological incubators.
- Quality Control:
- Ensure all testing procedures comply with Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.
- Monitor and maintain the accuracy and precision of laboratory instruments through regular calibration and maintenance.
- Identify and report any deviations from quality standards to the Quality Assurance Manager.
- Data Recording and Reporting:
- Accurately record test results in laboratory information management systems (LIMS) or manual logs.
- Prepare detailed reports on water quality for management and regulatory authorities.
- Maintain confidentiality and integrity of all laboratory data.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Follow strict safety protocols to handle hazardous chemicals and biological materials.
- Ensure the laboratory is clean, organized, and compliant with health and safety regulations.
- Dispose of laboratory waste by environmental and safety guidelines.
- Collaboration and Support:
- Work closely with the production and quality assurance teams to address any water quality issues.
- Assist in the development and implementation of new testing methods and procedures.
- Provide training and guidance to junior staff or interns as needed.
Qualifications and Skills
- Education:
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a laboratory setting, preferably in the water or beverage industry.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in using laboratory equipment and software.
- Knowledge of water quality testing methods and standards.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Good communication and teamwork abilities.
- Certifications:
- Certification in laboratory safety or water quality testing is an added advantage.
Working Conditions
- The role involves working in a laboratory environment with exposure to chemicals and biological samples.
- May require occasional fieldwork for sample collection.
- Standard working hours with occasional overtime based on operational needs.
