Job Description
The Zanzibar Joint Programme (ZJP) is a collaborative initiative by UN agencies aimed at supporting Integrated Innovations for Sustainable Development: Empowering vulnerable Communities in Kaskazini Unguja and Kaskazini Pemba, Zanzibar.
The climate pillar of this joint program aims at contributing to the overall PLANET pillar goal towards an inclusive and gender-responsive management of natural resources, enhancing climate change resilience, disaster risk reduction (DRR), and promoting the use of efficient renewable energy. The program’s overall outcome is that by 2027, people in Kaskazini Unguja and Kaskazini Pemba, Zanzibar, especially the most vulnerable, contribute to and benefit from these efforts.
To achieve this, the programme brings together multiple UN agencies, including UNEP, UNDP, UNESCO, WHO, and UNCDF. UNEP plays a leading role for the climate pillar alongside its specific commitments within the ZJP focus on environmental sustainability, ecosystem-based adaptation, and promoting green energy solutions.
Purpose of the Position the ZJP Coordinator will play a crucial role in ensuring the effective coordination and implementation of the joint programme’s climate pillar. The incumbent will support UNEP’s commitments and facilitate collaboration among the participating UN agencies to drive collective results. This position will be hosted within the UN coordination framework in Zanzibar and will report to UNEP, with close collaboration with the Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) and other UN agencies.
Task description
Inter-Agency Coordination:
- Support the coordination of the inter-agency group working on the climate pillar (UNEP, UNDP, UNESCO, WHO, UNCDF), ensuring alignment of activities and joint planning.
- Organize and facilitate regular coordination meetings, including preparing agendas and documenting key decisions and action points.
- Promote collaboration and synergies among agencies to maximize collective impact and avoid duplication of efforts.
Programme Implementation Support:
- Assist in the implementation of UNEP’s commitments under the ZJP, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery of planned activities.
- Monitor progress of climate-related activities, tracking outputs and outcomes.
- Contribute to the development of joint work plans, budgets, and implementation strategies.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting:
- Collaborate with the RCO and participating agencies to develop a results framework and relevant indicators for the climate pillar.
- Prepare and submit regular progress reports, highlighting key achievements, challenges, and lessons learned.
- Support data collection and the documentation of best practices and success stories.
Stakeholder Engagement and Communication:
- Facilitate engagement with government counterparts, civil society organizations, and community stakeholders.
- Contribute to visibility and communications efforts by helping disseminate programme results and impacts.
- Represent the climate pillar in relevant meetings, workshops, and events.
Relevant Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in programme coordination, project management, or inter-agency collaboration
Languages
- English – Fluent (Required)
- Swahili – Fluent (Desirable
Education
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in environmental sciences, natural resource management, climate change, development studies, or a related field
- A master’s degree is considered an asset
Skills and experience
- Knowledge of climate change resilience, disaster risk reduction, and renewable energy issues.
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in programme coordination, project management, or inter-agency collaboration.
- Experience working with UN agencies or international organizations is an asset.
- Strong facilitation, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to work in a multi-stakeholder environment and manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills.
- Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development.
- Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel.
