Job Description
Job Summary The Traffic Marshall is responsible for directing and controlling traffic on construction sites, roadworks, or at events to ensure the safety of workers, pedestrians, and drivers. They monitor and direct vehicles to ensure smooth flow, avoid congestion, and prevent accidents.
They work closely with construction workers, contractors, and other personnel to maintain a secure and organized environment. They are key personnel in ensuring the safety of workers, pedestrians, and motorists by providing clear guidance and maintaining safe traffic movement in potentially hazardous or congested areas.
Traffic Marshalls are particularly crucial in construction zones, where there may be temporary road closures, diversions, or obstacles that could impede the flow of traffic.
Qualifications for Traffic Marshal in ICD/CFS.
Educational Requirements
- A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Certifications in traffic management, logistics, or occupational safety are highly desirable.
Professional Experience
A proven track record with at least 1–2 years of experience in traffic control, logistics,coordination, or safety management, preferably in a high-traffic industrial environment such as dry ports, warehouses, or logistics hubs.
Technical Competencies
- Comprehensive knowledge of traffic flow management, especially for heavy vehicles, machinery, and containerized cargo.
- Strong understanding of occupational health and safety standards, with expertise in enforcing compliance with safety regulations and PPE usage.
- Proficiency in identifying risks and implementing preventive measures to ensure safety and operational efficiency.
Certifications and Training
- Certification in traffic marshalling or traffic management is mandatory.
- Training in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and first aid is highly preferred.
Physical and Operational Readiness
- Physically fit to perform outdoor duties, including standing for extended periods and responding quickly to emergencies.
- Strong ability to handle high-pressure situations while maintaining composure and professionalism.
Key Attributes and Soft Skills
- Exceptional attention to detail for monitoring and enforcing compliance with safety and traffic protocols.
- Effective communication and leadership skills to provide clear instructions and coordinate with team members.
- Demonstrated confidence and authority to enforce policies and ensure adherence to safety measures.
Responsibility Awareness
- Ability to effectively supervise and direct the movement of vehicles, personnel, and equipment within the dry port.
- Commitment to ensuring all personnel consistently wear the required PPE and adhere to established safety protocols.
- Regularly inspecting and reporting safety violations, near misses, and incidents to management in a timely manner.
Language Proficiency
- Fluency in English and the local language (e.g., Swahili) to ensure effective communication with a diverse workforce.
