Overview
Zantel, officially known as Zanzibar Telecom Limited, was a prominent telecommunications company in Tanzania, particularly recognized for its services in the Zanzibar region. Zantel expanded its operations to mainland Tanzania in 2005.
Over time, its ownership changed, notably with Millicom International Cellular, the company behind Tigo, acquiring a controlling stake. This led to the merging of Zantel’s operations with those of Tigo Tanzania, consolidating their presence in the Tanzanian market. Later, Millicom sold this combined entity. Axian Telecom then acquired the merged Tigo and Zantel operations. Following this acquisition, Axian Telecom initiated a rebranding, and the services previously offered under the Zantel and Tigo brands are now being provided under the new brand name “Yas Tanzania”.
