Overview

Uwezo Tanzania is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing access to quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all children in Tanzania. Established in 2010, Uwezo focuses on assessing and improving literacy and numeracy skills among children aged 6 to 16 years.

Key Activities:

  • Annual Learning Assessments: Uwezo conducts nationwide assessments to evaluate children’s competencies in basic literacy and numeracy. These assessments provide valuable data on learning outcomes, highlighting disparities and informing policy decisions.
  • Innovative Interventions: To address identified learning gaps, Uwezo implements programs like “Jifunze,” which adapts the “Teaching at the Right Level” (TaRL) approach. This initiative focuses on supporting children who lag behind in foundational skills, enabling them to acquire essential reading and numeracy competencies.
  • Community Engagement: Through the “Uwezo na Jamii” program, Uwezo fosters partnerships among parents, teachers, and local leaders. This collaborative effort aims to improve the learning environment, enhance school attendance, and boost overall learning outcomes.

Mission and Vision:

  • Mission: Uwezo is committed to demonstrating how to improve learning outcomes and keeping communities and leaders focused on learning through assessment, research, innovations, partnerships, and advocacy.
  • Vision: A society in which all children are learning and realizing their full potential.

By generating evidence on learning levels and advocating for effective educational practices, Uwezo Tanzania plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of education in the country.
