Overview
The Jane Goodall Institute Tanzania (JGI-TZ) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to wildlife research, conservation, and community development. Established in 2001 by Dr. Jane Goodall, JGI-TZ continues her pioneering work on chimpanzee behavior and conservation.
Operating from its headquarters in Dar es Salaam, JGI-TZ coordinates conservation activities across various regions in Tanzania, including Kigoma, Mpanda, Mwanza, Arusha, and Dodoma. The organization collaborates with local communities, government authorities, and other stakeholders to implement sustainable conservation practices.
A key initiative of JGI-TZ is the Gombe Stream Research Centre (GSRC) in Gombe National Park, where ongoing research focuses on chimpanzee populations and their habitats. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of chimpanzee behavior and supports conservation efforts.
In 2023, JGI-TZ launched the USAID Tumaini Kupitia Vitendo (Hope Through Action) project, a $29.5 million partnership aimed at enhancing sustainable development, habitat restoration, and protection in Western Tanzania. This project builds upon two decades of collaboration between JGI-TZ and USAID, focusing on improving livelihoods, agricultural practices, and forest management to benefit both local communities and wildlife.
Through these efforts, JGI-TZ strives to create a harmonious relationship between people, animals, and the environment, embodying Dr. Goodall’s vision of a better, more sustainable world.
