Overview

​Temeke Municipal Council is one of the five municipal councils within the Dar es Salaam Region of Tanzania. Established on November 10, 1999, under the Local Government (Urban Authorities) Act No. 8 of 1982, it serves as the local government authority for the Temeke District.

Administrative Structure

Temeke Municipal Council is administratively divided into two divisions Mbagala and Chang’ombe and comprises 23 wards and 142 sub-wards (mitaa) . The council’s headquarters are located at Plot No. 326, Block T, Chang’ombe, along Mandela Road, near the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Geography and Demographics

Covering an area of approximately 656 square kilometers, Temeke is the southernmost district of Dar es Salaam . As of the 2022 census, the district had a population of 1,346,674, making it the second most populous district in the region . The area is characterized by a tropical climate, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 35°C and annual rainfall between 800mm and 1200mm.

Economy and Infrastructure

Temeke is known as a manufacturing hub, hosting a significant portion of Dar es Salaam’s industrial activities . The district is home to the Port of Dar es Salaam, the largest port in Tanzania, and the Mwalimu J.K. Nyerere Trade Fair Grounds, which hosts the annual Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF) . Agriculture, fishing, and small-scale farming are also prevalent economic activities in the area.

Public Services

Education: The municipality has 140 pre-primary schools and 134 primary schools, including institutions offering special education for students with disabilities. There are also 63 secondary schools, comprising both public and private institutions.

Healthcare: Temeke hosts 136 medical facilities, including 3 hospitals, 16 health centers, and 102 dispensaries. The Temeke Regional Referral Hospital is the largest healthcare facility in the district.

Water and Sanitation: The municipality’s primary water sources include surface water from the Mtoni plant and lower Ruvu, as well as groundwater from 232 deep boreholes. However, only about 68.1% of the daily water demand is currently met.

Transportation: Temeke has a road network totaling 628 kilometers, comprising asphalt, gravel, and earth roads. The district is also served by the Central Railway Line and the TAZARA Railway Line, facilitating transportation to various regions within Tanzania and neighboring countries .​
