Overview
The Tanzania Women Lawyers Association (TAWLA) is a non-governmental organization established in 1989 and officially registered in 1990 under the Societies Act of Tanzania. TAWLA is dedicated to the professional advancement of women lawyers and the promotion of women’s and children’s rights, as well as good governance.

Key Objectives:
TAWLA’s objectives include:
- Advocating for gender equality and promoting human dignity and gender justice through policy, community action, media engagement, and legal and institutional reforms.
- Providing legal aid services to vulnerable women and children.
- Coordinating the Gender Land Task Force to advocate for better land laws and land rights awareness for women.
- Undertaking policy research and advocacy for legal reforms, and campaigns for women and children on issues of equality and human rights.
- Educating the public by raising awareness on gender and legal rights issues through the media, workshops, publications, and drama.
- Supporting the professional development of women lawyers in Tanzania.
Membership:
TAWLA has approximately 800 registered members, including women lawyers from diverse backgrounds such as state attorneys, private advocates, judges, magistrates, corporate executives, lecturers, and legal advisors in both the public and private sectors.
Regional Presence:
TAWLA’s headquarters are located in Dar es Salaam, with branch offices in Arusha, Dodoma, Mbeya, Mwanza, and Tanga.
