Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTCL)
Overview
The Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTCL) is the oldest and largest fixed-line telecommunications company in Tanzania. Established by the Tanzania Telecommunications Company Incorporation Act of 1993, TTCL emerged from the restructuring of the former Tanzania Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (TP&TC), which led to the creation of TTCL, Tanzania Posts Corporation, Tanzania Postal Bank, and the Tanzania Communications Commission (now known as the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority, or TCRA).
Headquartered in Dar es Salaam, TTCL provides a range of services, including mobile voice, data, and fixed-line communications. The company operates under the Tanzania Telecommunications Act of 1993, which designates it as the licensee for fixed basic telephone services in both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Before the emergence of mobile operators in 1994, TTCL held a monopoly on fixed-line services in mainland Tanzania and a duopoly in Zanzibar alongside Zanzibar Telecoms Limited (Zantel).
