Overview
The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) is the bar association for Tanzania Mainland, established in 1954 by an Act of Parliament the Tanganyika Law Society Ordinance of 1954. It is currently governed by the Tanganyika Law Society Act, Cap 307 R.E. 2002.
TLS has several key objectives:
- Maintaining and improving the standards of conduct and learning within the legal profession in Tanzania.
- Facilitating the acquisition of legal knowledge by members of the legal profession and others.
- Assisting the government and courts in matters related to legislation, administration, and practice of law in Tanzania.
- Representing, protecting, and assisting members of the legal profession concerning conditions of practice and other related matters.
- Protecting and assisting the public in Tanzania on legal matters
The society’s vision is to become an independent bar association for a just society, and its mission includes creating a conducive environment for the legal fraternity, promoting legal knowledge, supporting state organs in legislation and administration of the rule of law, and assisting the public in accessing justice with sustainable professional standards.
