Overview

Médecins du Monde (MdM), known internationally as Doctors of the World, is a humanitarian organization founded in 1980. It provides medical care to vulnerable populations affected by war, natural disasters, disease, famine, poverty, and exclusion. Operating in nearly 40 countries, MdM offers both emergency and long-term medical services.

Médecins du Monde (MdM) has been active in Tanzania since 1992, initially focusing on HIV/AIDS development projects. In 2010, the organization launched a comprehensive harm reduction program in Dar es Salaam’s Temeke District to address the health needs of people who inject drugs. This program aims to prevent and reduce risks associated with drug consumption, offering services such as opioid substitution treatments and syringe exchange programs. Despite a challenging political environment, MdM has played a pivotal role in promoting and institutionalizing harm reduction strategies in Tanzania.
