Overview
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is a global organization dedicated to influencing, encouraging, and assisting societies worldwide to conserve nature and ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable.
Within the IUCN, the World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL) plays a pivotal role in advancing environmental law globally. It provides specialized knowledge and assistance to strengthen the legal foundations of nature conservation and sustainable development. This is achieved through the conceptual advancement of environmental principles, norms, and laws, as well as by building the capacity of communities to benefit from the environmental rule of law.
WCEL is a network comprising environmental law and policy experts from all regions of the world. These volunteers contribute their expertise to develop new legal concepts and instruments, aiming to enhance the effectiveness of environmental governance and promote sustainable practices worldwide.
Through its initiatives, WCEL supports the creation and implementation of legal frameworks that protect the environment, ensuring that legal systems worldwide are equipped to address contemporary environmental challenges.
