Overview
Heifer International Tanzania (Heifer Tanzania) is a non-governmental organization committed to ending hunger and poverty through sustainable agriculture and community development. Operating in Tanzania since 1974, Heifer Tanzania has supported over 1.3 million rural farming families, focusing on enhancing food security and economic stability.
The organization collaborates with smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth, to improve agricultural productivity and market access. By providing training, resources, and facilitating connections to markets, Heifer Tanzania empowers farmers to transform their household farms into thriving businesses.
A significant area of focus is the dairy sector. Heifer Tanzania has established numerous milk collection centers, connecting thousands of dairy farmers to formal markets and enhancing their incomes. For instance, the Tanzania Inclusive Processor Producer Partnerships in Dairy (TI3p) project aims to boost the incomes of 88,000 smallholder dairy producers through improved milk production, collection, processing capacities, and market development.
In addition to dairy, Heifer Tanzania is involved in other agricultural value chains, including oilseeds and poultry. The organization emphasizes climate resilience by promoting sustainable practices such as tree planting, rainwater harvesting, and the use of biogas units.
