Overview
Blue Alliance is an international non-governmental organization dedicated to the regeneration of coral reef ecosystems and the enhancement of local community livelihoods through the establishment and management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Founded in 2015, Blue Alliance collaborates with governments to create self-sustaining MPAs that integrate ecological conservation with economic development.
Key Objectives and Activities:
Marine Protected Areas Management: Blue Alliance manages over 1,700,000 hectares of coral reef ecosystems across four MPA networks in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Zanzibar. The organization aims to expand its management to six MPA networks by 2030, with the goal of protecting 9,000,000 hectares of coral reef biodiversity.
Reef-Positive Businesses: To ensure the financial sustainability of MPAs, Blue Alliance develops and invests in reef-positive businesses. These enterprises focus on ecotourism, community-based aquaculture, sustainable fisheries, and blue carbon credits, all designed to reduce specific drivers of coral reef degradation while generating long-term income for MPA management.
Community Empowerment: Central to Blue Alliance’s mission is the empowerment of coastal communities. The organization engages in community development programs, including job creation, capacity building, and the promotion of sustainable livelihoods, thereby improving the resilience of local populations.
Recent Initiatives:
In February 2024, Blue Alliance launched three reef-positive businesses in Tanzania and the Philippines. These initiatives aim to support MPA management and provide sustainable income sources for local communities.
