Japan Tobacco International
Overview
Japan Tobacco International (JTI) has a significant presence in Tanzania through its subsidiary, Tanzania Cigarette Company Limited (TCC). Established in 1961 as East African Tobacco, the company underwent several ownership changes over the decades. In 1995, RJ Reynolds acquired a 51% stake, and in 1999, JTI acquired all non-U.S. tobacco operations of RJ Reynolds, including TCC. By 2000, JTI had increased its shareholding in TCC to 75%. TCC is the sole producer of cigarettes in Tanzania, offering brands such as Embassy, Sweet Menthol, Portsman, Club, Safari, Camel, and Iceberg. The company operates nationwide, employing over 440 staff members across 16 regions.
